Along Came Betty

This fantastic hard bop jazz quintet played the Monterey Jazz Festival in 1999 and 2003. Reviewers call them "Monterey's preeminent jazz group" (Mac McDonald, Monterey County Herald); "A top drawer band in the style of the Jazz Messengers;" (San Francisco Examiner, Phil Elwood) and simply "A wonderful band" (Ray Hoffman, Jazz Improv Magazine.) Sophisticated and melodic with an extraordinary conversational style.

Alta California Dance Company

Authentically costumed dancers portraying characters from all walks of life demonstrate the social dances of our region in the 1830s and 1840s. Don't miss the candle dance!

Black Irish Band

These wildly popular "Hooligans of Jamestown" have played all over the world. They received an ASCAP award for best original song (historic). Performing original and traditional songs - including many that will resonate with our theme this year! (Picture at right)

The Blue Tones

High energy, danceable blues, featuring Aron Forbes, Andrew and Daniel McKay, Gavin Salmon and Kirk Danielson.Voted one of the top three bands in the nation by Teen People Magazine, frequently seen at the Monterey Blues Festival and even B. Bob Kaspar

Stunning 6-and 12-string solo acoustic guitar and offbeat humor, offset nicely by a voice "sounding like morse code and barnyard animals". Bob performs regularly in the Western U.S., Canada, Europe and Scandinavia as well as on television and radio.

Broadway Classics Ensemble

First Night Monterey in conjunction with the Historic Maritime Museum is proud to present a living history program called, "Dark of the Moon". This approximately 30 minute presentation, which includes both slides and video, depicts a night of Sardine Fishing on the Monterey Bay in 1940.

Michael and Dianne are "The Killens" -- a dynamic husband and wife acoustic alternative country duo. Michael has won two Emmys including best musical score for a PBS special "Rachel and Andrew Jackson - A Love Story". Dianne is past winner of the Boston Music Award for country artist of the year. Most recently from Nashville, they are here on the Central Coast in new roles as musical directors of Carleton Hall.

Try your hand at paint by numbers with artist germain Hatcher, who has designed a large moonscape mural to be completed by celebrants throughout the evening.

Montage Opera Ensemble

Monterey Bay Lion Dance Team

The traditional Chinese ritual lion dance is a demanding and challenging art form complete with martial arts movements, music, elaborate costumes -- including the lion and Happy Buddha-- and ceremony. Performers move to the beat of drums, cymbals, gongs etc. This mesmerizing presentation is led by Leonard Han, an instructor at CSUMB. (Picture at left)

Moonscape Moon Dance

Make your wish for a new year while dancing on a magical moonscape! An exciting art installation created by students from all over Monterey County who participated in First Night Monterey Outreach programs, First Night Art Works! Featuring lighting artist Vranna Sue Hink, from Montana.

This very special interactive performance is designed with children and their families in mind. Children will be invited to perform on stage. Ms. Mayer is a professional opera singer who has performed all over the United States and Europe. Mr. Hulse is an accomplished pianist and conductor who has accompanied cabarets, operas and musical theater productions. Guest flutist Richard Mayer will join them.

The Remarkable Richard Feynman

One-part Einstein, one-part Merlin, one-part Puck, this extraordinary man was as famous for his outrageous sense of humor as he was for his Nobel Prize in physics. Actor Noel Wood (Pictured at left) brings Feynman to life -- as written by Gregg Stebben.

Rev. Rabia with Virgil Thrasher

Immersed in Black American Root music, Reverend Rabia pays tribute to Memphis Minnie, Billie Holiday and Leadbelly. She also pays respect to the likes of Chris Whitley and Tom Waits. Accompanying herself on guitar with veteran musician Virgil Thrasher on chromatic and diatonic harmonicas.

Ric Masten

Ric is "a stand-up poet", a humorist, a teller of tales, and a national treasure. His anecdotes, pointed stories and accurate observations speak to the ironies of the human condition. Ric is hilarious and poignant. (Picture at right)

Richard Myer - The Magic Man

A talented magician and comedian, Richard has performed world wide and has won the prestigious OMC Stage Competition and IBM San Francisco Area Close-Up Competition. Widely sought for festival and events in Northern California, we are lucky he has been choosing to stay closer to home for First Night!

Shrine Clowns
Street Performers
Look for this amazing group of men and women who are known the world over for "walking so the children can run". These dedicated volunteers have perfected their characters, costumes and jokes-to raise funds for 22 hospitals for children with orthopedic or burn problems.

Shyamala Moorty

Solo classical Indian dance, emphasizing rhythmical footwork and storytelling through intricate hand gestures and facial expressions are performed by this wonderful soloist and principal dancer from the Aman Folk Ensemble. She has also been a company member with Malathi Iyengar's Rangoli Company since 1994.

Sophia, Songhealer

Solo vocalist accompanies herself on guitar, zither, dulcimer and percussion. Sophia may inspire you to join her in a variety of uplifting folk, new age and world music classics.

Stories and Murals

From the teens of Alisal High School, under the direction of Angelica Simmon and Jose Gil. Beautiful, moving stories and murals depicting the migrant farm worker experience. Also, stories and murals from the students of Community Partnership for Youth in Seaside - stories and murals about "Dancing on the Moon", this year's First Night theme. A First Night Art Works! project.

Sun and Moon Ensemble

Maria Lexa and company will delight you with an extraordinary troupe of magnificent and talented giant puppets, masked characters, moon creatures and musicians. They will also appear in both the Twilight Parade and the Grand Finale!
